Pablo Ziegler, Quique Sinesi guest Walter Castro by Andree Möhling
Pablo Ziegler ist der bedeutendste Interpret des Tango Nuevo und legitimer Nachfolger Astor Piazzollas. Bereits mit 14 Jahren spielte er in unterschiedlichen Jazzformationen. In jungen Jahren komponierte er für Musical, TV und Kino und gründete sein erstes Terzett, das klassische Musik mit Jazz Arrangements verband. Von 1978 bis 1989 arbeitete Pablo Ziegler kontinuierlich mit Astor Piazzolla und war nicht unmaßgeblich am durchschlagenden Erfolg Piazzollas beteiligt. Nach der schweren Erkrankung Astor Piazzollas baute Pablo Ziegler das Quintett for New Tango auf, das bei Presse und Publikum große Erfolge feierte. Es folgten Aufnahmen und Konzerte u.a. mit Milva und Gary Burton und dem Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, sowie Auszeichungen für seine musikalischen und kompositorischen Leistungen in New Orleans, New York und Buenos Aires. Pablo Ziegler tourte den amerikanischen Kontinent, Europa und Asien. Zahlreiche Platten wurden unter seinem Namen veröffentlicht.
Quique Sinesi – guitar
Quique Sinesi´s Musik schöpft aus dem reichen Erbe des südamerikanischen Kontinents, den traditionellen rhythmischen Candombés der argentischen Einwohner, genauso wie den melodischen Elementen des Tango, der Milonga und der Musik europäischer Einwanderer. Die Tänze werden genauso wie traditionelle Folk Rhythmen mit neuen Konzepten interpretiert, Jazz wiederum verbindet sich mit diesen Elementen und heraus kommt eine ungemein lebendige und spritzige Symbiose. Quique begann seine musikalische Karriere u.a. als der Gitarrist des Bandonionisten Dino Saluzzi und als Mitglied des New Tango Quartetts unter Pablo Ziegler (Ex-Pianist des Astor Piazzolla Quintetts). Jazzgrößen wie Jim Hall waren beeindruckt von Spieltechnik, Ausdruck und Kompositionen dieses jungen Ausnahme Gitarristen. Quique tritt u.a. mit Charlie Mariano, Markus Stockhausen, Erling Kroner und Marcelo Moguilevsky, Javier Girotto auf. Er wurde von Jim Hall zur Überreichung des Jazzpar Prize, der größten Auszeichnung im Jazz, als Gastmusiker nach Kopenhagen eingeladen. Seitdem konnte er bei internationalen Festivals und Konzerten seine Fähigkeiten durch eigene Kompositionen, seine emotionale Tiefe und die perfekte Beherrschung des Instruments unter Beweis stellen.
Walter Castro – bandoneon
Walter Castro begann sein Bandoneon Studium bei Professor Domingo Mattio und führte es dann bei Professor Julio Pane und Nestor Marconi fort. 1995 gründete er das “Sexteto Menor”, das später als das ” Sexteto Sur” bekannt wurde. Anfang der neunziger Jahre spielte er in Osvaldo Pugliese’s Orchester und performte für eine Show mit dem Namen ” Images” im Orchester von Horacio Salgan. Er tourte durch Argentinien und das Ausland. 1993 gewann er den Wettbewerb als Bandoneon Professor und ” Group practices assistant” der bekannten ” Popular Music School” von Avellaneda. Er spielte zusammen mit Atilio Stampone, Osvaldo Berlingieri, Virginia Luque, Raúl Lavié, etc. 1995 spielte er in dem Quintett der Sängerin Adriana Varela mit und wurde Mitglied in Pablo Ziegler’s “Quintet for New Tango”. Mit der Gruppe “5/4″(cinco cuartos) folgte eine CD Aufnahme mit Begleitung von brasilianischen Sängern. 1998 nahm er zusammen mit Pablo Ziegler und dem Orpheus Kammerorchester eine CD mit dem Namen “Tango Romance” ( BMG/RCAVICTOR New York) auf. Im Jahr 1999 folgte eine zweite CD mit dem Namen “Pablo Ziegler Quintet for New Tango” für das gleiche Plattenlabel. Walter Castro hat in den Jahren auch zahlreiche weitere Aufnahmen mit verschiedensten Musikern gemacht, so wure im Oktober 1999 z.B. eine CD der 1996 gegründeten Instrumentalgruppe “Presencia Tanguera” von Malopea herausgegeben. Walter Castro spielt in dieser Gruppe zusammen mit Angel Bonura, Hernán Posseti und Germán Martinez. Walter Castro spielt einen dynamischen und lebhaften Bandoneon Stil, aber ebenso drückt er die Sorgenhaftigkeit und die Melancholie des Tango aus, für die dieser so bekannt ist.

Er hat ihn wahrscheinlich verinnerlicht, den modernen Tango. Schließlich war Pablo Ziegler jahrelang Pianist in der band von Astor Piazzolla. Jetzt brachte er das Tangofieber in den Jazzclub “domicil”. Mit seinem “New Tango Duo”, das gar nicht als Duo daher kam. Mit dem jungen Bandoneonspieler Walter Castro und dem Gitarristen Quique Sinesi bildete Ziegler nämlich ein argentinisches Dreigestirn. Traditinelle Tangostücke und Milongas, Kompositionen von Astor Piazzolla als auch eigene Stücke von Ziegler standen auf dem Programmdes Trios, das mit ungeheurer Virtuosität miteinander kommunizierte. Da suchte Walter Castro stets den Blickkontakt zum Pianisten, um mit ihm im gemeinsamen Unisono die so markanten Tango – Rhythmen seiem Instrument zu entlocken. Vielfältig waren dabei die Stimmungen, von überschwenglicher Lebensfreude bis zu seelenvoller Besinnichkeit. Quique Sinesi vervollständigte die Melodien mit Teils ungewöhnlichen Sounds auf der E – Gitarre. Im Triospiel aber ging der excellente Gitarrist meist ein wenig unter. Wie gut, dass es deshalb immer wieder verschiedene Duo-Konstellationen gab. Diese öffneten vor allem in Zieglers Kompositionen Räume für improvisatorische Einfälle

Pablo Ziegler is the most important artist of the Tango Nuevo and Astor Piazzolla’s legitimate successor. He already played in several jazz ensembles when he was only 14 years old. In his younger days he composed for musicals, TV and movies and founded his first Trio, which combined classical music with jazz. Between 1978 and 1989 he worked continously with Astor Piazzolla and contributed substantially to his enormous success.
When Piazzolla became seriuosly ill, Pablo Ziegler formed the Quintett for New Tango, which was celebrated by the press and the audience. Recordings and concerts followed, together with (among others) Milva, Gary Burton and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London. He received awards for his achievements as composer in New Orleans, New York and Buenos Aires.
Pablo Ziegler was on tour on the american continent, Europe and Asia. Many Records were published under his name.
Quique Sinesi’s music creates from the rich inheritance of the southamerican continent, from the traditional rhythmic Candombés of the argentinian inhabitants, from the melodic elements of Tango, the MIlonga and the music of the european immigrants. The dances are as well as the traditional folk rhythms interpreted with new concepts, Jazz on the other hand joins together with these elements, and the result is an immense lively and sparkling symbiosis.
Quique began his musical career, as the guitarist of the Bandonionist Dino Saluzzi, and as member of the new Tango Duo Quartet with Pablo Ziegler (Ex-pianist of the Astor Piazzolla Quintet). Famous Jazz-stars like Jim Hall were impressed of the technic he plays, the expression and the compositions of this exceptional guitarist. Quique plays (among manys) for example together with Charlie Mariano, Markus Stockhausen, Erling Kroner and Marcelo Moguilevsky.
He was invited by Jim Hall to be guestmusician at the presentation of the Jazzpar Prize (the most important prize in the Jazz ) in Kopenhagen. Since this time he could show his abbilities with his own compositions on several international concerts and festivals and could proove his emotional deepness and the perfectly control of his instrument .

He started extensive touring through the interior of Argentina and abroad. In 1993 Walter wins the contest for Bandoneon Professor and Group practices assistant at the famous “Popular Music School of Avellaneda”. He played in music shows with Atilio Stampone, Osvaldo Berlingieri, Virginia Luque, Raúl Lavié, etc. In 1995 he participates in the quintet for singer Adriana Varela. In the same year he joins “Pablo Ziegler´s Quintet for New Tango”.
Same year he forms part of the quintet “5/4″ (cinco cuartos) and with this group records a CD with singers from Brazil. In 1998 he records with Pablo Ziegler and The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra a CD called “Tango Romance” with BMG/RCAVICTOR New York. In 1999 he records another CD called “Pablo Ziegler Quintet for New Tango” for the same record label. He also has made several recordings with multiple performers and in October of the same year Melopea edited a CD of the instrumental group formed in 1996 with three musicians. This group is called “Presencia Tanguera” with members Angel Bonura, Hernán Posseti and Germán Martinez. Walter Castro playes a dynamic and vivid bandoneon style, as well as he gives expression of sorrow and melancholy which Tango is so well-known for.

It’s easy to understand why Argentinian pianist Pablo Ziegler has been described as the successor to the phenomenal Astor Piazzolla. His latest venture, with guitarist Quique Sinesi and bandoneon virtuoso Walter Castro, Bajo Cero, based on their tour, leaves little doubt of his remarkable contribution to Tango Nuevo.
The music is smart with just enough of a jazz flair to appeal to tango fans and to make it accessible to listeners unfamiliar with traditional tangos and milongas. Milonga “La Rayuela” opens the CD and wows the listener with fast paced piano and bandoneon work. “Flor de Lino,” one of three traditional tangos on this CD, slows the pace and charms with its interplay between guitar and piano. “Chin Chin,” a piece written by Piazzolla, exudes passion and demonstrates the improvisational skills of these three talented musicians. Ziegler’s composition “Milonga del Adios” walks the listener through the passion and melancholy of the Argentinian soul in this slower piece. Quique Sinesi’s composition entitled “Planufer Milonga” is a stunning track with a little Candombe-inspired rhythm tossed in for interest.
Bajo Cero illustrates the talents of this remarkable trio. One could only hope that Pablo Ziegler, Quique Sinesi and Walter Castro continue touring and come up with another CD as sharp and delightful as this recording.

CD: Bajo Cero – by George W. Carroll
The latino musical culture has many wonderful & varied nuances, exemplified by this Pablo Ziegler-Quique Sinesi-esque clutch of keen, ethereal originals penned by Ziegler. The disc will delight the sensibilities of any diehard latino jazz aficionado.
Pablo writes with an ‘urgent’ style which (I feel) will prove to be his forte’ in CD projects to follow featuring his original compositions. I don’t mean to offer my views in any presumptuous manner………But, I relegate my readers to the positive ‘gypsy’ influences Pablo has offered in the vernacular of ‘Django’ or, something maybe ”Grappelli’ might have interpreted or written. My point here is that Pablo could have easily (In the past) given these two musical giants his music to record, & I think both Django & Grappelli would emerge edified by Pablo’s art. Last, this CD is a confident & new direction in original music, & might I add, it’s timely as well.
