Les temps changent [The times are changing] is the title of my new project, 10 years after Machination.
A new quartet with François Corneloup, whom I first met in 1991 in the context of a collective experience called “Incidences”.
Christophe Marguet, who like myself, spent a lot of time in the early days experimenting with jazz by playing with the so-called “elders”, accompanying various French and American soloists in the Paris clubs before turning to the vast world of improvised music.
And finally, Hasse Poulsen, whom I met at various impromptu sessions soon after his arrival in France.
The times are changing because music is not only about sound but also has to do with space and time; it’s not just a question of four or three time, any more than it is of five or seven time, there’s also no time at all or again, multiple time, and all this is something we
have fun with.
The times are changing, and they change us too, because a group consists of all the encounters one’s made and the time we’ve already spent together or separately helps us to construct, deconstruct or reconstruct our music at any given moment.
The times are changing, here and elsewhere, because we’re not deaf to the world around us, our desire to play and say what we have to say is increasingly urgent and imperious.
The times are changing, some time ago another musician already said this very thing because we’re a group that doesn’t worry about whether it has or hasn’t got any models.
The times are changing, friendship, shared experiences, the driving need to build again and again, to keep going forward… we’re avid for all this…
Ein neues Quartett : mit François Corneloup, den ich zum ersten Mal 1991 während des kollektiven Projekts „Incidences” traf ; mit Christophe Marguet, der wie ich seine Erfahrungen im Jazz bei den älteren Musikern gesammelt hat, indem er viele französische und amerikanische Solisten in den Pariser Jazzclubs begleitete, bevor er sich dann der weiten Welt der improvisierten Musik öffnete ; und mit Hasse Poulsen, den ich gleich nach seiner Ankunft in Frankreich während zahlreicher Sessions kennen lernte.
„Les temps changent “: denn die Musik bewegt sich nicht nur zwischen Tönen, sondern auch durch Raum und Zeit, nicht nur im 3er und 4er Takt, oder im 5er und 7er Takt, sie besteht auch aus Pausen, kann zeitlos sein oder sich sehr viel Zeit lassen… und wir wollen dabei Spaß haben !
„Les temps changent”: und sie ändern uns. Eine Band ist das Aufeinandertreffen all dieser Begegnungen und Momente, die man zusammen oder getrennt erlebt hat, sie ermöglichen uns, ihnen spontan musikalisch Ausdruck zu geben, sie zu gestalten, zu erneuern, zu ändern.
„Les temps changent” , hier und anderswo : weil wir unserer Umwelt gegenüber nicht taub sind, fühlen wir mehr und mehr die Dringlichkeit, uns musikalisch dazu zu äußern.
„Les temps changent” (ein anderer Musiker hat dies schon einmal vor einigen Jahren gesagt) : weil diese Band sich nicht damit belasten will, dieser oder jener Referenz gerecht werden zu müssen.
„Les temps changent” : Ausdruck unserer Freundschaft, unserer Lust auf gemeinsame musikalische Projekte, und der Notwendigkeit, immer wieder aufs Neue zu konstruieren. Nach vorne schauen ! Mit großem Genuss !
